On an early Saturday morning, WBI students and staff gathered under the overcast skies at the Historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum located in Exposition Park to be part of a wonderful cause. It was the United Way HomeWalk 2009 fundraising event to assist the homeless. According to the HomeWalk 2009 website, Los Angeles is the homeless capital of the nation. To help the community, both campuses teamed up, registered, and joined hundreds of volunteers.
According to WBI staff Nancy De La Cruz from the Panorama City Campus, the experience was not only rewarding, but it made you appreciate what you presently have in life.
She added, "When we first arrived at the walk, they handed you a t-shirt and they also gave you a necklace that had a heart warming story
attached in a plastic pocket." The story spoke of just one of many living on the streets and struggling to find shelter and a meal for the night.
WBI is very proud to have participated at HomeWalk 2009.
Other past event involvements have included Mayor Villaraigosa's Day of Service, senior centers, and blood drives. The school is already signed up for next year's walk, committed to activities that help the people of Los Angeles and its surrounding communities. |
